No meat but a whole lotta flesh

I’ve never been to Portland, Oregon, although practically everyone who’s been there–even if they’ve just met me–says I would like it there. Perhaps it’s because they intuit that I could not resist a trip to this, the world’s first (and only?) vegan strip club. The owner is a vegan, and the menu is all vegan, but fear not, there is still plenty of supple flesh to fest your eyes upon (according to the article). I wonder if all the dancers are vegan? Natural, non-surgically enhanced? Are the patrons mostly vegan? Do they have a non-leather pony?

I found this on Feministing, and they bring up some good points about women’s bodies not only being used to sell actual “meat”, but a meat-less lifestyle as well. This is my whole issue with PETA. I find it hard to believe that anyone is persuaded to go vegan just because there are ads with nubile babes purring about how they’d rather go naked than wear fur. Then again, there is the long-standing tenet of the marketing world that sex sells…beer, cars, fast food, cigarettes, fucking Downy dryer sheets. Even though veganism is not a product, perhaps enough vegan strip clubs would get the masses thinking more readily than the total buzzkill of a realization that our system of food production is corrupt, vile, and a deadly health risk. Shake it for the cows, ladies!

*Disclaimer: I am not necessarily against strip clubs, or sex work in general. I’m not entirely comfortable with it, though. Sure, in an ideal world, women would have much better ways of earning good money than prostitution or from starring in videos with the words “ass” and “blaster” in the title, and there would be no such movie title as “Barely Legal” or “Girls Gone Wild”, etc. If someone’s lifelong ambition is to be an internet porn star or work the peep shows, I support their right to choose, but I do have some trouble really believing that most women in this line of work, if offered the chance to make the same money at another job, would not ditch the business in a heartbeat.
